ICANN hat in einer als Ereignis inszenierten, im Internet weltweit übertragenen Pressekonferenz den Startschuß für die Neuen Top Level Domains. In der von ICANN veröffentlichten Liste von rund 1900 Bewerbungen findet man auch die online-domains.

Hans-Peter Oswald von domainregistry.de erklärt dazu: „Tucows und die I-REGISTRY Ltd aus Deutschland haben neben vier weiteren Interessenten die Bewerbungsgebühr für die online-domains entrichtet und eine formgerechte Bewerbung abgegeben. Damit ist zwar noch nicht sicher, ob ICANN auch diese Bewerbung annimmt, aber die online-domains sind einen Schritt weiter.“

Der Bewerber I-REGISTY Ltd schreibt über die Funktion und den Kreis der Nutzer von .online:

„With the TLD .online Registrants can use a broad and global namespace, which has a clear, concise and easy to remember meaning for being online.

The TLD .online and its domain names are dedicated and thereby specialized to create content and facilitate communication among Internet users. The benefit for Internet users is a new namespace, which has no barriers and is open to everybody. Registrants will have unlimited options when registering a domain because .online opens up a completely uninhabited namespace where an unlimited number of domain names is available, and a suitable domain name is easy to find for everybody. According to statistics, ‚online‘ is the most frequently used word in domain names. This applies also to domain names on the secondary market. Registrants associate the Internet with “Online” and like to register domain names which contain this string.

A new TLD .online could shorten domain names and supplies an intuitive namespace, eliminating the string ‚online‘ at the second-level. The SRS of Afilias, the registry service-provider for .online, is already connected to most registrars worldwide. Adding further TLDs and implementing them on the registrars’ systems is therefore simple, proven and eases the provision of .online worldwide. The service level for registrants will be that .online domain names will be available at many ICANN-accredited registrars and their resellers in many countries.

Beyond the easy provision of .online the Registry Operator will offer equal access to all registrars worldwide and does not plan to impose unnecessary processes during registration of a domain name to registrars. The wholesale pricing for .online domain names will be attractive, especially in comparison to existing TLDs. Enabled by the easy integration into the registrars’ systems .online domains will be available at many registrars so that registrants can expect a heavy price competition among the registrars which will lead to a competitive pricing. Domain names with a competitive pricing and a clear meaning will attract many registrants to register .online domain names. Thus registrations are expected to rise quickly and Internet users will get used to .online domain names quickly.

.It is our aim that such a globally used namespace will gain quickly a substantial reputation among Internet users, becoming a symbol of quality for Internet users worldwide. The reputation will be backed and further enhanced by the donation of a certain percentage of the proceeds of I-REGISTRY to charitable causes. Since Registrants of .online have the opportunity and are expected to participate in the allocation of proceeds, the donation allocation and donation spending will be transparent and add to the reputation of .online.

Due to its attractive price the .online domains will be in price competition to many other existing ccTLDs, gTLDs and potential new gTLDs. Since the string itself is easy to remember like web, info and mobi, and due to the attractive price and the donation to charitable causes we expect that many registrants will decide to register a .online domain name. .online will be a global string, having a meaning in many countries around the world.“

Übrigens hat sich I-Registry ltd auch für .onl beworben, was wohl eine Art Abkürzung für .online ist. Bei .onl ist I-REGISTRY Ltd. der einzige Bewerber (http://www.domainregistry.de/…).

Als vor einigen Jahren viele Firmen bereits eine Domain registriert hatten und die Nachzügler oft eine Situation vorfanden, daß sie ihren Namen nicht mehr unter .de und .com registrieren konnten, gab es einen allgemeinen Rat: „Nehmen Sie Ihren Firmenname und hängen Sie online an!“ Deshalb gab es dann auch Seiten wie mueller-online.de. Es ist daher kein Wunder, daß „online“ in zig Webseiten vorkommt, was eine gute Voraussetzung für den Erfolg dieser Domain darstellt.

Mit online-domains können sich viele Firmen, Priatpersonen und Organisationen besser präsentieren. Eine Die Darstellung mit der online-domains ist attraktiver und kürzer-damit auch merkfähiger. Die Merkfähigkeit einer Domain ist beim Marketing von Internetseiten ein entscheidender Faktor.
